He was born 29 May 1630, crowned on 23 April 1661, died on 6 February 1685 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, London. The ‘Restoration’ of the Stuart monarchy to the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland had taken place in 1660 when King Charles II returned from exile in Europe in following the period of the Protectorate and the civil wars, known as the ‘Interregnum’, from 1649-1660.
