The Williamite War In Ireland, the War of the Two Kings.
Colonel Thomas Lloyd (nicknamed Little Cromwell), leading Inniskilling cavalry and infantry, had defeated Colonel Ó’Kelly’s Jacobite force of mainly militia and raparees* at Boyle in County Roscommon. During what was a surprise attack, Ó’Kelly’s post was overrun and after a 10 mile chase Ó’Kelly escaped with his cavalry. However, forty of his officers were captured and 8,000 cattle confiscated.
As a result of the Inniskillings's success on 25 September, Marshal Schomberg, commanding King William's Army in Ireland encamped at Dundalk, and on their return 'complimented them so far as to ride all along their line with his hat off '.

Raparees is from the Irish language ropairí, plural of ropaire, and translates as half-pike or pike-wielder. These Irish pikemen were irregulars who fought for the Jacobite force during the Williamite war in Ireland.
